Now, for the first time ever and featuring countless previously unpublished images, Burri’s remarkable and adventurous work is brought together in this career retrospective of over 400 duotone photographs. Edited and compiled by the distinguished writer Hans-Michael Koetzle, in close collaboration with Burri, this unprecedented retrospective is a historic book of the major political events and key personalities of the twentieth century – as seen through the eyes of one photographer. Nothing like this book on Burri has ever been published before, and it is a real coup for Phaidon to be the first to publish his entire career’s work. A member of the prestigious Magnum photo agency, Burri is a photographer whose curiosity and humanity as a photographer have afforded him almost unrestricted access to the major events and personalities of the last 50 years. In this way, Rene Burri Photographs is a fascinating personal account of the major artists, politicians and personalities that Burri has made a part of his life. First achieving international recognition with the seminal photography book on post-World War II Germany Die Deutschen in 1962, Burri has since become one of the most important figures in the history of photography: he is universally revered by his peers for his sympathetic eye and his capacity to capture larger-than-life personalities on film. Rene Burri Photographs comprises the culmination of years of scholarly research by distinguished writer Hans Michael Koetzle into Burri’s important contribution to reportage photography, resulting in an incisive introduction, a series of in-depth essays at the beginning of each chapter and in extended captions that accompany each image. The book is designed by prominent Swiss graphic designer Werner Jeker of ADN Design, Lausanne. In 21 thematically-organized chapters, we accompany Burri across Europe to the Middle East, Vietnam, Brazil, Cuba and beyond; we visit Picasso, Le Corbusier, Yves Klein and Giacometti in their studios; we witness political figures such as Che Guevara in repose, and Fidel Castro at the helm. The culmination of a dozen years of reporting, both on and off assignment, these stories, each one different in style and tone, immerse us in the lives of Honduran coffee growers, members of a Kansas City street gang, drought-plagued villagers from Niger, and doctors in an embattled Bosnian hospital. They chronicle the birth of a first child, an explosion of family violence, the struggle of a farming family to hang on to its ancestral home, and the unearthing of a half-hidden grave said to hold the remains of a slave. Described as having an acute, sometimes hard-edged visual sensibility and a literary voice, Richards writes in order to come to terms with the complexities of what he is observing. At a time when photojournalists are often relegated to illustrating the ideas of others, he persists in interweaving his words and photographs to create boldly narrative stories that bear witness to the dramas of real lives and comment on the times in which we live. His portrayal of their ceremonies and daily work, his mesmerizing close-up portraits, and his powerful landscapes of the American West were intended to serve as an anthropological resource on a ''vanishing race''. Curtis’s project was published in The North American Indian, a series of luxurious volumes funded by financier J.P. Morgan and President Theodore Roosevelt. These remain among the most collectible and sought-after photobooks in the history of the medium. The American Indian cultures have not disappeared altogether as Curtis feared, but his project’s success lies in its powerful record of faces and places that mark a bygone era in American history. His photographs, which portray over 80 separate tribes, are marked by dramatic lighting, sensitivity, and beauty. This introductory monograph includes a range of portraits, landscapes, and pictures from around the American West alongside examples of Curtis’s studio portraiture, which was more typical of the Pictorialist photography of his time. Yet if you happened to live in the West African country of Benin during the 1960s and 70s, photography was quite literally a matter of life and death. It is a commonly held belief in many non-Western cultures that a person’s soul lives on, as if trapped, within the photograph. In Benin, with its rich spiritual traditions of animism (voodoo is now Benin’s official religion), whereby fetishes or objects are regarded to embody powerful spirits, the photograph came to play a fascinating role in the rituals of death. This unique collection of portrait photography, painstakingly assembled and conserved by the West African art specialist Alex van Gelder, opens an entirely new chapter in the history of African and world photography. Most people’s knowledge of African photography is limited to the Bamako school of Mali, whose masters Seydou Keita and Malick Sidibé were discovered at the beginning of the 1990s. But where Keita and Sidibé worked predominantly in the town, taking pictures of a young urban population keen to establish the modernity of their lives, here in Benin the photographers were often very ambulant, travelling by bicycle to far flung places to find their clients, and sometimes developing their exquisitely crafted photographs in makeshift darkrooms constructed in the bush. Marked by dark dramas and deep mysticisms, these portraits record a people caught between a pre-colonial past and a post-colonial future. For many of the people in the photographs it would be their first and last encounter with a photographer. Among the weddings and communions, the courting couples and proud parents, lie startling images of revenants and juju men, voodoo priests and priestesses, thieves and assassins, prostitutes and pimps, and an extraordinary sequence of 'après-mort' or death-bed portraits. This unique and groundbreaking assimilation of rare images – analysed by poet and curator Okwui Enwezor, one of the world’s great authorities on twentieth-century African culture – brings to life a series of mysterious stories from a context that is stigmatized by a tumultuous history.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Phyllis Galembo","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55043086778695,"sku":"9780714845135","price":60.5,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1010\/2420\/3079\/files\/51t3lms15hl-_sx429_bo1_204_203_200.jpg?v=1789565290"}],"url":"https:\/\/luova.fi\/en-eu\/collections\/julkaisija-phaidon.oembed","provider":"Luova.fi","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
