What emerges is a bewildering picture of Kid’s many personalities, inevitably raising the question: how well do you know the person who lives next door?

My neighbour Kid was 42 when he died. He regularly swept our shared porch, put out the rubbish and kept an eye on things when I was away. As Kid couldn’t read well, I helped him with his post. He borrowed my phone whenever he didn’t have any credit on his own. Kid had a turbulent life: he was banned from seeing his son and struggled with alcohol and drug addiction. Many people found his bellowing voice and coarse speech intimidating. In the last year of his life, he spent more and more time with drifters and junkies, begging on the street for change. His body was found, floating between two boats in an Utrecht canal.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1010/2420/3079/files/kid-mock-up-houtjetouwtje-3-400x606-q30.jpg?v=1789565606
nina-korhonen-monkey-to-monkey-signed
Nina Korhonen - Monkey to Monkey (Signed)

HB, 120 pages, signed
Text: Göran Sommardal
Publisher: Self-published, 2018
Language: Swedish / English
Print run: 590 copies

Lisätiedot

Some of the red ribbons twisted round the scraggy trunks of the trees depicted in the pace-setting photo in Nina Korhonen’s book Monkey to Monkey are so discolored and tattered that they might very well have been put there at the very beginning of the 12-year-cycle circumscribing the pictures in the book. On the other hand, Korhonen’s overall arrangement of pictures does not claim to sum up or to present a comprehensive understanding of this period. There are too many such Chinese times and Chinese places to render a summing-up feasible. On the contrary, Nina Korhonen makes it her narrative duty to undo the “natural” order of things. Pictures from the same locality show up in different places in the sequence of photos while pictures taken at different times are not seldom placed together because they share the same motif.

The Chinese animal zodiac is a repeating cycle of 12 years, with each year represented by an animal. 2004 and 2016 were “The Year of The Monkey”.
